COMMISSIONING OF KUMASI INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
In a momentous ceremony marking a significant milestone in Ghana's aviation sector, the newly constructed Terminal of the Kumasi Airport, now Prempeh I International Airport has been officially commissioned. The ceremony highlights the completion of a fundamental project aimed at enhancing the Ghana's aviation infrastructure and service delivery.
His Excellency, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, President of the Republic of Ghana, commissioning the Airport, emphasized his administration's commitment to infrastructure development. The timing of the commissioning, coinciding with the 25th-anniversary celebration of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II's enstoolment, is not a mere quirk but a fitting tribute to the rich cultural heritage and historical legacy of the Ashanti kingdom.
The President explaining the reason behind renaming of the airport, said Nana Agyeman Prempeh I contributed significantly to shaping the destiny and future of the Asantes. He highlighted how Nana Agyeman Prempeh I streamlined governance and enhanced Asanteman's ability to respond to external and internal threats.
The newly commissioned terminal, which can handle approximately eight hundred thousand 800,000 passengers annually, represents the second and third phases of the airport's redevelopment. The upgrades include an extended runway capable of accommodating wide-body aircraft, such as the Boeing 737-800, and various state-of-the-art facilities designed to enhance passenger experience and safety have been added to the project.
The event was graced by the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, Keith Christopher Rowley, His Royal Majesty, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the British High Commissioner to Ghana, among other notable dignitaries.
ADK Consortium appointed as Engineers in charge of the design review and construction supervision, steered and managed this monumental project on behalf of the Ghana Airport Company Limited and the Government of Ghana. ADK’s Team of Technical Experts, Architects and Engineers led by Ing. Dr. Michael Krakue as Project Director, worked tirelessly and ensured that Client's requests and instructions were implemented as per design specifications and requirements in line with quality and international standards.
A project that commenced in 2018 and required loads of hard work and dedication from all stakeholders was commissioned with great success despite some challenges like COVID-19 when most projects either stalled or went through a stale phase.
PHASES 2 & 3
Work on Phase Two (2) of the Airport Project began in 2018. It included the construction of a new terminal building to facilitate 800,000 passengers per annum, two boarding bridges, a road network, perimeter fence, a power substation and car parking lot among others.
Phase Three (3) of the Airport Expansion Project involves the extension of the existing runway pavement from 1,981 meters to 2,320 meters, construction of a new taxi link and two Apron Parking Stands, an Air Traffic Control Building, and a Fire Station among others. The Project Contractor is Messrs Contracta Construction UK Ltd.
