Sekondi-Takoradi Selected Roads Project
The Government of Ghana (GOG) recognizes the importance of road transport in facilitating socio-economic development of the nation. It is in this direction that the National Transport Policy set out a vision to create an integrated, efficient, cost-effective and sustainable transport system responsive to the needs of society, supporting growth and poverty reduction.
In line with this vision, the Ministry of Roads and Highway (MRH) through the Department of Urban Roads (DUR) seeks to improve accessibility and reliability of road transport users within the twin city of Sekondi-Takoradi in the Western Region of Ghana. ADK Consortium is the Project Consultant undertaking the design reviews and construction supervision of the work being executed by Messrs Viabuild NV Africa, Belgium.
Congestion and poor conditions of the existing road network coupled with the limited supply of alternative routes have resulted in long travel times and high operating costs for travel between Sekondi and Takoradi and access to the Takoradi Port. The existing roads also have limited facilities for pedestrians, the physically challenged and other non-motorized users.
In order to address road transport infrastructure challenges within the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis, DUR intends to widen the roads that provide direct linkages between Sekondi and Takoradi and other selected roads to improve access to the Takoradi Port. The interventions will improve the quality of life of the citizenry and enhance economic activity at the port.
The scope of the project involves the improvement of 21km of urban roads, including related footbridges, bridges over the Butua Lagoon and a railway line. It is expected that these improvements will be constructed to include the following complementary work:
i. Major intersections that may be rotary or signalized other than the interchanges;
ii. All complementary road works that are required to make the defined
improvements functional;
iii. Adequately designed road pavements;
iv. All related drainage structures, are appropriately covered;
v. Facilities for pedestrians, cyclists and public transport;
vi. Traffic management measures, including road marking, signs, barriers, signals and lighting;
vii. Measures to improve safety, especially for vulnerable users; and
viii. Improved streetscape and landscape of open areas within or adjacent to the Right of Way (ROW)
