RECONSTRUCTION OF SCHOOL JUNCTION TO TEMA MOTORWAY ROAD PROJECT
The Government of Ghana under the auspices of the Ministry of Roads and Highways (MRH) acting through the Department of Urban Roads (DUR) intends to widen the roads that provide linkages for communities within the Ashaley Botwe, School Junction, Nmai Dzor, and Borteyman to the Motorway enclave. The project is objectively aimed at reducing travel time, improve accessibility, reduce vehicle operating costs and eventually improve the quality of life of citizens as well as enhance the socio-economic activities along the road corridor and beyond.
The Project has become necessary because of the rapid development in Ashaley Botwe, School Junction, Nanakrom and its environs which is within the Adentan Municipality. These areas åre rapidly developing as a result of the urban sprawl in the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area (GAMA). The project area has grown rapidly, and the land use patterns have changed dramatically over the last few years from farmlands to residential and commercial properties. This change in land use pattern has brought about excessive travel from the area to other parts of GAMA. This change in land use has also made it difficult to meet the project zone residents demands in terms of good road infrastructure. Travelling on the road network within the project corridor is characterized by unpaved roads in very poor conditions translating into travellers experiencing high vehicle operating costs when travelling on these unpaved roads.
It is for these reasons that the Ministry of Roads and Highways, acting through the Department of Urban Roads, considers it imperative to reconstruct the road from School Junction to the Motorway to link the surfaced section from School junction to the N4 (Tetteh Quarshie Mamfe Road), Otanor Road through Adjiriganor to the Boundary Road. The objective is to give alternate access from Tema and eastern parts of Accra to the project area rather having access from Tetteh Quarshie Interchange.
The reconstruction of School Junction to Motorway Road mainly comprises major intersections that may be rotary or signalized other than the interchanges; all complementary road works, adequately designed road pavements; drainage structures; facilities for pedestrians and public transport; traffic management measures, streetscape and landscape features within the Right of Way. Messrs Oswal Investments Limited is the Contractor executing the works under the supervision of Messrs ADK Consortium with DUR of MRH as the Implementing Agency.
The extent of the road reconstruction from School Junction to Motorway Road originally covered the main dual carriage way of 5.8km made of 7.3m width on each side with a median of 2m. Subsequently, variation order was issued to contractor to include service roads of about 6.5m on each side of the dual carriage way. The Contract was signed on 23rd May, 2022 and the project commenced on 1st August, 2022. The project duration is 18 months and therefore projected to be completed by 1st February, 2024.
